Are you chasing views and followers? I’m going to be radical in stating that these don’t matter! Creating a thriving community with a core group will get you much farther along your journey to success.
Discovering who you are creating content for will help you reach the right people and in turn, help you to create a thriving community.
Q1. Who are you creating content for?
If you answered with a very vague description of some random group of people, that’s okay and normal! However, that often leaves us trying to reach a vague group of random people.
If you try to be all things to all people, you won’t be anything to anybody.
In business, this translates to:
When you try to sell to everyone, you wind up selling to no one.
Fear not my friend. We are going to create what is known as an Ideal Customer Avatar. If customer sounds too icky, we can rephrase it…
My Ideal Viewer Avatar
Brands do this to create a foundation of who they want to reach. It helps to create content that speaks to one person. When we can do that, it also connects to even more of the right people.
We are going to create this fictional person using as much information as we can.
For now, let’s focus on answering 10 questions. Add as much information to each as you can. It may help if you already have some loyal followers that you can use as a beginning for your avatar.
1. What are their goals and values?
2. What do they do for fun?
3. What books, magazines and blogs do they read?
4. What is their personality?
5. Where do they spend their time online?
6. What do they like to spend their money on?
7. What are their demographics?
8. Do they have pets? What type? How many?
9. What are their challenges or what keeps them up at night?
10. Now give them a name!
Extra: Find a picture that will represent your avatar.
I think you've just defined the one person who will absolutely LOVE you!
Be as detailed as you can, the more information you provide to your avatar, the easier it will be to speak to them.
